How many times do Tim Flannery, the Climate Commission and the likes of Greg Combet, Julia Gillard, Christine Milne and Craig Emerson and others have to be exposed before they cease in their attempts to mislead the Australian public using outrageous scare tactics when they have no real evidence to support their claims and predictions about climate change?
The recently released Climate Commission report, ‘The Angry Summer’ is a document with huge holes and should not be taken seriously. It certainly did not warrant a press conference where outrageous and unjustified predictions were made by Will Steffen from the Climate Commission. In an effort to justify his organization’s existence he has committed an act of fraud and he and the Climate Commission should be held to account.
Yes! There were a number of hot days, very hot days in some parts of Australia and despite the Climate Commission’s previous and incorrect predictions that we would never see heavy rain again, it rained like it would never end along the east coast of Australia. But that is not the whole story and the tale they told at the press conference was not even a true story.
What makes the actions of the Climate Commission intolerable is that they are well aware of the facts but choose to hide them in their report. In essence, they simply selected a few hot days to make their case.
Their careers depend on it of course and all Australians should understand that this is not objectivity on display; that the Climate Commission has a vested financial interest in promoting the perils of climate change on behalf of the Labor Government.
Like all those in the climate change club they are paid by government or sponsors with a vested green interest to keep the myth alive. The Climate Commission is not as independent as they would like us to believe and with the Australian Government logo on their website, it’s clear that it also relies on taxpayers and therefore appeasing the Labor Governments climate change agenda is critical to its survival.
According to Greg Hunt, Shadow Minister for Climate Action, Environment and Heritage, if the Coalition wins government, $20 million will be made in budget savings and it will be done by the closing of 3 climate change agencies including the Climate Commission. All I can say is good riddance, the Commission is a clearly a waste of money.
Climate is supposedly their domain and they would know that an unusual and unique set of circumstances prevailed over a short three week period and it was not consistent with any recent previous summers which have been cooler than normal. In fact contrary to their hysteria and their supposed summer on steroids; the year 2012 ranked as only the 39th warmest since 1910.
Those televisions station weather presenters who talk about the hottest summer on record as did the reporter on Channel 10 – 5pm news (Saturday 9/3/13) should have to make a retraction because it is not the whole truth when in fact the year’s average temperature did not break any records. Such statements typify the hype indulged in by most, if not all television channel news programmes in supporting the left-wing climate change spin in their combined efforts to deceive the public with all their weather drama.
At best, parts of the summer were a one–off, an exception and therefore logically, it does not justify the beginning of some kind of trend as predicted by Will Steffen. What was his explanation for the last year’s cooler summer? Was that the beginning of a trend?
Nor was it the hottest summer on record in any Australian state whatsoever and far from it. The Climate Commission has no excuses because it has all the data and should know that this recent summer was no basis on which to make irresponsible and unfounded predictions about future summers – ‘one swallow does not a summer make’.
Yet Will Steffen set out at that press conference to deliberately scare the Australian public, stating that this was a summer on steroids and it was a sign of things to come. It was unfounded scaremongering of the highest order.
This last summer was nothing out of the ordinary. Our sunburnt country has seen it all before and has had many summers hotter than this recent one that got the Climate Commission in such a lather. They are either fools of the highest order or a bunch of grand standing con men.
Despite what they said about our summer on steroids and that this was a glimpse of what was to come, it is grossly misleading and an example of careful data selection and avoiding the full meaning of that data.
Will Steffen in releasing the Climate commission’s ‘The Angry Summer’ actually commenced his press conference referring to the fact that his was not going to be an emotional or political statement but factual. Of course he then went on to say how we had experienced a ‘summer on steroids’ which in itself sounds to me like a very emotive statement to make and not at all factual. Notwithstanding the emotive title of that report – The Angry Summer. Nothing factual about that either.
So how ‘angry’ was our summer? Was it on steroids as the Climate Commission would have us believe?
According to Paul Homewood (http://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com) who extensively researches these issues – not that angry at all and I have taken the liberty of reprinting parts of his article and hope he doesn’t mind.
Bear in mind his analysis is simply based on statistics provided by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) which he has checked and which anyone can see on the BOM website.
Paul begins by highlighting the fact that the BOM announced that the summer of 2012/13 has been the hottest on record. To support that claim the BOM produced a number of temperature graphs. Graphs can be time consuming to comprehend on a PC monitor so I have not reprinted them all here but they can be seen at the web link above. Here is Paul’s analysis of that data;
Paul Homewood: The first thing to note, though, is that the five-year trend has been falling in the last few years, and is at the same level as during the late 1970’s. Furthermore, this latest summer follows two cooler than average ones.
Paul then goes on to check BOM’s own temperature data in each state and finds; In none of the seven states/territories was the 2012/13 summer the hottest, or even near to it.
The following summary ranks this recent summer in each state with regard to its ‘earliest hottest summer’ according to the BOM’s stats and graphs and how BOM’s claim about this being Australia’s hottest summer relates on a state by state basis.
The legitimacy of Paul’s view is clear; that even by the BOM’s own stats this recent summer was not as angry as the ‘climate changers’ would have us believe.
The following ranking compares the 2012/13 summer in terms of how hot it was in comparison to previous summers in each state.
In NSW it ranked 7th since 1938; NT it ranked 3rd since1970; QLD it ranked 4th since 1981
In SA it ranked 4th since1938; TAS it ranked 14th since1920; VIC it ranked 6th since1980;
In WA this summer ranked 7th hottest since 1972
Paul Homewood: “The highest ranked was the Northern Territories, but the past summer was still 0.23C cooler than the record set in 1985. And in every state, hotter summers were experienced many decades ago, as far back as 1920.
So, why was the summer the hottest on record for the nation as a whole? Quite simply, each region has had a hot one at the same time. By contrast, in previous years, the hottest summers in some areas has been offset by cooler ones elsewhere.
Take 1980 as an example. That summer was hotter than 2012 in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania, and almost as hot in SA. Yet WA and NT both had cooler than average ones, thus pulling the national average down.
So is there any significance in this pattern? Maybe, if it represented a much more widespread warming pattern. But, as we know, there is no evidence of this globally. HADCRUT show the whole of 2012 as the 3rd coldest year in the last ten.
And, certainly, a look at the annual numbers for Australia does not suggest that anything unusual at all has been happening in the last few years. Since 2005, the long term trend has dropped back to the post 1980 level. Meanwhile 2012 ranked only 39th warmest since 1910.
Quite simply, one summer in one country cannot “prove” global warming, any more than a cold winter elsewhere will disprove it.”
There is an obvious point to be made. The Climate Commission in highlighting their report completely ignored that temperatures have actually fallen over the past 3 years and instead based their scaremongering on what was in effect, just 3 weeks of weather?
They completely hid the fact that overall 2012 was actually cooler than many previous years and as a reminder; 2012 ranked only the 39th warmest since 1910.
Putting all that aside for a moment, when will these people face up to the now overwhelming evidence that proves that global warming has not happened for at least the last 16 years and possibly the last 50 years or more (UK Met Office). Even the man in charge Doctor Pachauri, the Chairman of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has publicly agreed with that 16 year assessment.
So, with no significant warming where does that leave CO2?
The climate hysterics assured us that CO2 was the cause of global warming but in the absence of such; what does that do to their claims about the evils of CO2? Such claims are further weakened when you consider that there is general agreement that CO2 levels are up, so how much influence does it actually have on the climate? Hardly any it would appear and certainly not to the extent that it can be categorized.
Where is the evidence to support the likes of the Climate Commission, the Gillard Government and the Greens and their beloved carbon tax because right now if the evil CO2 was before the courts the charges just don’t stack up? Tony Abbott should also throw out his direct action approach. It is not justified, will not make any difference to global temperatures, even if action was warranted and it’s a waste of money.
It is not evidence to suggest that something might happen in the future because based on current indications higher levels of CO2 have had very little upward influence on global temperatures, if any. So any predictions about warmer temperatures and what may happen in the future due to the influence of CO2 is pure speculation and not based on existing proof.
Those in the global warming club rely on models that simply produce the required result from the ingredients used. Put in scary stuff and you’ll get a scary answer. Logically, if you wanted to produce a model in an effort to predict the climate in the future with any certainty you would start with what you know. On the basis of the last 16 – 40 year global temperature data you could not possibly justify predictions of rising temperatures.
Those like Gillard and Combet and the rest of the Labor Government who describe CO2 as pollution are not only lying but they are doing it a great disservice. What we do know is that without CO2 every living thing on this planet including polar bears and the human race would die. So how much is too much? As far as CO2’s influence on the climate, the jury is well and truly out and we should not be jumping to conclusions and committing acts of economic lunacy based on such flimsy evidence.
Those same people talk about an increase in extreme weather events when there hasn’t actually been an increase and any speculation as to the effect of global warming and CO2 on such climate activity doesn’t fly. That’s confirmed by their own side in the IPPC AR5 draft report summarised by Dr Pielke Jr;
‘No significant observed trends in global tropical cyclone frequency…does not support AR4 conclusions regarding global increasing trends in droughts…low confidence regarding the sign of trend in the magnitude and/or frequency of floods on a global scale…there is currently no clear and widespread evidence for observed changes in flooding’
In other words the alarmist predictions of an increase in extreme climatic events such as tropical cyclones/hurricanes, flooding and droughts due to man’s influence on the planet are completely false proven by their own research and data collection. There simply hasn’t been an increase in extreme weather events.
The Climate Commission’s press conference was also foolish because in any event, what happens in Australia is a mere fraction of the bigger global picture? We count for little in any effort this country might make to reduce emissions and that throwing huge amounts of money in the direction of climate control and increasing the cost of living for all Australians for absolutely no return is crazy.
One of the previous emotive arguments put to the Australian public by these people was the fact that we are the highest per capita emitters in the world. This claim supposedly justified some action on our part. Of course, it’s an absolute furphy even if it were true. It is also a very good example of the propaganda used by the climate change club.
For example if 330 million people in America emit just half the amount of CO2 per person than each of the 22 million people do in Australia, which country is the biggest emitter? Certainly not Australia. (Population 22 million is ABS projected population 13/3/13)
Let’s face it. The climate constantly changes and there is little we can do, if anything to control it? It would be naïve or arrogant to assume otherwise. The only thing we can do, if their doom and gloom predictions were the slightest bit reliable, is to take measures so we can adapt to any changes that the climate can enforce. Something man and woman have been doing for thousands of years.
We should always do our best to run a cleaner planet and that does not mean allowing the Greens to throw away $10 billion of taxpayers’ money on supposed clean energy schemes that you can be sure; are unproven, have no practical application or are unlikely to make a sizeable contribution to the energy grid.
We are already spending a fortune on wind farms for little relative return in terms of practical energy. Electricity requires a constant base load and it needs to power cities. As yet there are no real alternatives good enough to replace coal fired electricity which is the cheapest form of energy, albeit now far more expensive due mainly to green scheme taxes. Hydroelectricity and nuclear are cleaner and will do the job but the Greens object to that resource.
If there was a practical alternative, the private sector would already be in the business and wouldn’t need an invitation by the likes of the Greens.
Then there’s the contrary-spin. The Climate Commission (Will Steffen) even had the absolute gall to suggest that the rain that they and in particular, Tim Flannery (Chief Commissioner) predicted, would never happen again because of climate change – is now happening because of climate change.
Gentleman you cannot have it both ways. The recent heavy rainfall on the east coast was simply due to the presence of a large low pressure cell and it’s a common weather pattern, nothing unusual, they have always been featured in the ebb and flow of our climate. They come and go because the climate constantly changes. So if the Climate Commission thinks this is man-made climate change how do you stop a low pressure cell from forming? Introduce a carbon tax? What rubbish!!
Whilst the Climate Commission is obviously acting as the Labor/Green climate change, propaganda machine, we would like to believe that the Bureau of Meteorology is a credible organisation. Sadly much like the CSIRO it appears not to be, having caught the same dishonest propaganda disease by omitting the truthful extent of its own stats. Referring to the ‘hottest summer on record’ is misleading and denies the real meaning of their own statistics.
For the Climate Commission’s reference and please! Will Steffen, (Commissioner) take note and I shouldn’t have to tell you this; when you are making ridiculous claims about Australian climatic conditions remember we live on a planet and the whole planet is effected by climate.
Australia cannot be seen in isolation, we do not have a roof or walls to retain the atmosphere that prevails above our heads. There are influences way beyond our borders which affect our climate not least solar activity, water vapour and the rest of the planet’s climatic patterns.
So what is happening on the global stage? Have temperatures risen enough in recent history to cause concern and justify Labor/Green’s Renewable Energy Tax, Carbon Tax and Solar subsidies that we are all paying for and which will take us all back to living in the dark ages because we can’t afford electricity?
For the answers to those tricky questions I am extremely grateful to Andrew Bolt for providing data from across the globe http://blogs.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/andrewbolt/
This is just some of the documented information he has provided which shows the real picture and not the one that Australia’s climate change propaganda machine constantly spews forth. Again the information he has provided is simply from those reputable organizations around the world who measure such things. These are people who are on the climate change side of the fence and not so-called sceptics.
Admittedly I have cherry picked from his column to simplify a summary of the relevant temperature details.
We’ve already seen how the UK Met Office revealed that temperatures have not risen over the last 16 years measured from 3000 weather sites around the globe and that Dr Pachauri, the Chairman of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has agreed with that assessment. However and unreasonably, given the short term basis for previous ‘global warming proof’ – he suggested that we would need to see 30 – 40 years of similar before being convinced.
According to Andrew Bolt; In 2008, Britain’s Met Office noted a 10-year pause, or sharp slowing, in the warming trend and asked this question in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’ annual State of the Climate:
Do global temperature trends over the last decade falsify climate predictions?
No, it decided. Global warming models wouldn’t be clearly wrong until the pause lasted 15 years. (Current available data suggests that we have already reached that point because according to the UK Met Office nothing really dramatic has happened to variations in global temperatures for 40 years or more.)
Obviously, Dr Pachauri would rather trust hypothetical models as to what might happen rather than what is actually happening, which if anything suggests that the world may well be heading to an ice –age or at least, that the planet is cooling not warming.
In order to simplify what is happening to temperatures from a global perspective, the following is the summary from each international weather data resource. It clearly shows that no matter which way you look at it there has been no significant warming on this planet for many years.
For RSS the warming is not significant for over 23 years…
For UAH the warming is not significant for over 19 years…
For Hadcrut3 the warming is not significant for over 19 years…
For Hadcrut4 the warming is not significant for over 18 years…
For GISS the warming is not significant for over 17 years…
Hadcrut 3 & 4 data refers to the Met Office Hadley Centre – one of the UK’s foremost climate change research centres.
GISS data refers to NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies
UAH data refers to the UAH satellite temperature dataset, developed at the University of Alabama.
I have not included the data that produced those summaries but it is available from the featured resource websites.
The Climate Commission’s recent press conference was a fraud on the Australian public. Will Steffen’s hysteria, when talking about a summer of steroids and how this summer was an indication of how next summer and the summers thereafter, had no basis whatsoever on which to support such scaremongering and it was an absolute disgrace.
Any reputable company that sponsors the Climate Commission should withdraw their sponsorship immediately. Such companies, by their investment in such an organisation, reveal a lack of integrity, they are supporting a dishonest and unworthy cause. And it will be continually proven to be so. Now there’s a prediction based on current evidence.
